I have always been fascinated by these colourful roses, and I felt compelled of painting them.
Do they actually exist? Yes — rainbow roses do exist, but not naturally.
Rainbow roses are created by artificially coloring white roses. The technique was popularized by Dutch florist Peter van de Werken around 2004.
A white rose stem is split into several sections. Each section is placed in water mixed with a different dye color. The rose absorbs the colored water through capillary action. As the petals develop, different areas take on different colors, creating the rainbow effect.
